mauiwindcam.com first came to your screens in 2001 with a view looking out at the inside Camp One windsurfing area. The original view was slightly upwind of the Camp One view we offer today - but it's the same general area.
In 2001 we only had very slow (dialup) connections to the cam, so image updates were limited to once every 10 minutes.
In May 2005, the cam was moved to the current Camp One cam location, bringing you much closer to the action and also letting us capture some great beach lifestyle shots. Higher capacity connections to the camera also allowed us to increase the image refresh to once every 15 seconds.
With the much improved cam location, traffic to the site increased rapidly and we added a range of new features, starting with daily timelapse movies and a gallery of favourite images that we'd saved since 2001, followed by weather and tidal data. Image refresh rates also increased again to once every 5 seconds.
August 2007 saw a major overhaul to the site and the introduction of a second cam looking down towards Kanaha. We also introduced live streaming on smaller versions of the images.
In May 2009, we added a third high-resolution camera looking out at the Kanaha Lowers break and invested significantly in the infrastructure we use to allow us to bring you full streaming of this famous spot. We are all blown away by the quality of the image from this cam and we hope you are too!
The original Kanaha cam was also moved slightly to give a view of the West Maui mountains and the refresh rate on the Camp One cam was increased again to 1 second.
During September 2009 we launched the Sprecks cam in partnership with Maui Surf and Turf Vacation Rentals. This cam brings a very different view to our locations and captures some fantastic cloud movement during the day - be sure to check out the daily replay videos!
So what's next... well, we've got lots planned, but you're just going to have to stay tuned to find out!
