It’s that “most wonderful time of the year” again!
So Sevin wanted to send you a special Woof for a fabulous Holiday Season and a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
Of course true to form he asked Santa for his very favorite things and I guess from looking at his picture he’s been a Good Boy this year!

He certainly looks like a Happy Boy to us!

Recently Ray and Sevin went for a cruise down to Kanaha and while they were gently paddling down wind were able to see and briefly film a couple of large turtles swimming closely by.

The quality isn’t great but you can see them quite clearly as they slowly glide under the awestruck man and dog.

First and foremost is our mascot and uber waterdog Sevin. His person is mauiwindcam founder, Ray Masters. Ray woke up on the morning of his birthday 2 years ago to discover his new best friend abandoned and chained to a neighbors mail box. This was a life changing experience for both dog and man. Since that minute they have been inseparable. You can follow the many adventures of Sevin on mauiwindcam as he and Ray play on the water either swimming, SUP’ing, windsurfing or playing frisbee.

Before Sevin arrived the most visible dog on mauiwindcam was Henry. This funny black dog could be seen lounging on the beach or picnic table almost every day. Since his owners moved off the beach he has become less visible but no less a part of our ‘hood. Henry is not much of a waterdog but he is a very loved part of our community and a great guard dog…..sometimes too great!

The gold colored Shar-Pei is Roxy. She has been on the beach longer than all our current furry residents. She is getting on in years but still enjoys sunbathing and playing in the sand. She has the most wonderful and gentle demeanor and is a favorite of all visitors to Friendly Beach.

Finally, the new dog in town is Sidney. Owned by resident sail maker Jeff Henderson of Hot Sails Maui. Sidney is the puppy of the beach and a bundle of fun loving, tail wagging energy. This black mix breed was a pound rescue and has taken to his new life on the beach with verve and constant excitement. He can be seen sailing on Jeff’s Hobie Cat or romping with Sevin, his play friend.

From time to time you will see other playful pets on the cams including Patch, Bidu and Ziggy.  So from our very doggy beach……woof woof to you all!

My bestest four legged buddy (OK two legged too) and uber waterdog Sevin has been imortalized on a windsurf sail to go along with his SUP board.

The sweet Hot Sails Super Freak is very useful 5.0m size so we should be getting lots of fun use out of it in our back yard. We have a nice F2 Slalom board to complete the set up and after getting some extra nose padding stuck down later today Sevin and I will take them out for the maiden voyage this week end…..if there is wind….which is looking sketchy right now.

I am just about to charge up the good old GoPro camera batteries so that we can document this auspicious occasion. Stay tuned for the resulting Emmy quality video

You can probably see the sail from a couple of miles away so if you see a funny grinning dog flying over the water come on over and give us a high paw!  See you out there!

One of the only “good” things about the artificial groins that have been installed on the beach is that they amplify the shore break.  So even a small bump out back results in a nice body surfable wave on the beach. Our mascot, the intrepid Sevin has been enjoying body surfing for some time but the other day he surprised us all when he jumped on a boogie board and showed us how he really is the ultimate water dog.

Sevin really has an amazing sense of balance as witness his ability to stay on the board in some pretty tough conditions. Now whenever he sees a boogie board he runs around barking and jumping with excitement.

He sure can teach us a thing or two about finding joy and living in the moment.

The 11 foot wonder was created by shaper Ryan Quigless of ArcLight Woods in Kihei and then painted by Ray Masters.  Extra thickness was added to the front with a wider plane shape for our water dog while special attention was paid to the rails and bottom to allow the riders to plane and carve it up with the best of them.

It runs a 1 plus 4 fin set-up to add to it’s versatility in all conditions. The board measures in at 11 foot by 30 inches with a maximum thickness of 5 inches. It’s constructed with an EPS foam core, epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth double 6 top and bottom. It has a lovely balsa stringer and tail block to add to the strength and looks. To finish it off Ryan created a beautiful Koa wood main fin.

The art was hand painted onto the coated foam core prior to glassing and features a huge image of Sevin in Ray’s inimitable style. Right now it has a stick on thin pad system similar to those found on Skate boards and some surf boards however Ray is searching for a see through soft pad with more thickness to allow Sevin to grip the board in the waves.

When the pads are fitted Ray and Sevin will be heading out to the South Shore to take in the last of the summer swells before heading back home for the start of the winter North Shore surf season. Stay tuned for more action photos and videos!

The timing was perfect as Mark and Cessna pilot, Big Mike, flew over Sevin and me as we just took off on a small wave.

This week we are having our very own custom SUP board glassed. It should be ready by the first of next week for us to go hit some waves. Just wait till you see the paint job on this puppy! We’ll be posting some photos and a story on the awesome custom board specially shaped for dog and man by Ryan Quigless of Arclight Woods in Kehei.

Of course our favorite Water Dog, Sevin had to be a great windsurfer.
